내가 파도를 그리는 것은 삶의 중심과 균형을 이루고자 하는 나의 다짐을 기록하는 일이다. 파도는 우리를 휩쓸고 끌어당기는 거대한 삶의 헤게모니를 상징하고 나를 포함한 현 시대를 살아가고 있는 사람들을 특정 오브제로 치환하여, 개인과 사회의 관계를 그림에 구성한다.

또한 나는 개인이 기대는 집단적 이념과 그 이념의 혼돈, 불안정성에 주목한다. 독립된 인간이라면 본질적으로 의지할 수 밖에 없는 이념과 압박, 시선, 그리고 동시에 양면적으로 존재하는 공동체적 위로에 대해 고민한다. 끊임없이 변화하는 옳고 그름의 잣대 속에서 스스로의 중심을 찾고 파도 사이를 자유롭게 살아가는 나의 염원이 반영되기도 한다. 

이 이야기를 부드럽게 전달하고 싶었기에, 표현 방식도 보다 부드러운 재료가 필요했다. 파도의 형식은 과거 우리나라를 비롯한 동아시아의 전통 양식에서 가져와 조금씩 나만의 표현 형태로 변형시켰다. 그렇기에 파도의 형태와 어울리면서도 고유의 빛깔을 지닌 안료인 석채를 주 재료로 선택했다. 바탕재는 린넨 혹은 광목 천에 아교반수를 하고 석채 및 봉채 같은 안료와 염료를 혼합해 사용하여 강렬하고도 포근한 빛을 연출할 수 있었다. 

세계의 진리를 찾고자 했던 철학자들은 모든 당연한 것들을 의심하면서 가장 마지막까지 남는 친구이자 적인 자기 자신을 의지했다. 혼란한 현대 사회 속에서 언제나 철학자처럼 살기를 기대할 수는 없겠지만, 부딪히는 파도 사이를 하릴없이 부유하며 살기보다는 나 자신의 의지대로 파도 위를 넘나들며 살고 싶다. 그런 이야기가 나의 그림을 통해 관객에게 잔잔히 전달되면 좋겠다.

Drawing waves is recording my determination to balance with the center of life. Waves symbolize the huge hegemony of life that sweeps and attracts us, and replace people living in the present era, including myself, with certain objects, to construct the relationship between individuals and society in the picture.

I also pay attention to the collective ideology that individuals expect and the confusion and instability of that ideology. Independent human beings are essentially concerned with the ideology, pressure, gaze, and at the same time, the two-sided community comfort that they have no choice but to rely on. It also reflects my desire to find my center and live freely among the waves in the ever-changing standards of right and wrong. 

I wanted to convey this story smoothly, so the way of expression also needed softer materials. The form of waves was taken from the traditional styles of East Asia, including Korea in the past, and gradually transformed into my own form of expression. Therefore, Seokchae, a pigment that matches the shape of the wave and has its own color, was selected as the main material. The background material was able to create a strong and cozy light by applying agglutination water on linen fabric and mixing pigments and dyes such as stone and bongchae. 

Philosophers who wanted to find the truth of the world relied on themselves, the last remaining friend and enemy, doubting all the obvious things. I can't always expect to live like a philosopher in a chaotic modern society, but I want to live across the waves at my own will rather than living rich between the waves. I hope such a story can be conveyed to the audience calmly through my paintings.
